American Society of Cinematographers

The American Society of Cinematographers received its charter from the State of California in January 1919 and is the oldest continuously operating motion-picture society in the world. 

 

American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers

American Society of Picture Professionals

Motion Picture Associaton of America

National Film Preservation Society

Professional Lighting and Sound Association

Society of Camera Operators

The American Book Producers Association was founded in 1980 as the trade association for independent book producers, also called packagers, in the United States and Canada. The American Society of Journalists and Authors helps professional freelance writers advance their writing careers.

 

American Society of Magazine Editors

The American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) is a non-profit professional organization for editors of print and online magazines which are edited, published and distributed in the U.S.  Established in 1963, ASME currently has about 850 members nationwide.  Among other things, ASME works to preserve editorial independence and speaks out on public policy issues, particularly those pertaining to the First Amendment.

 

American Society of Newspaper Editors

The American Society of Newspaper Editors is a membership organization for daily newspaper editors, people who serve the editorial needs of daily newspapers and certain distinguished individuals who have worked on behalf of editors through the years.

 

Asian American Journalists Association

Founded in 1981, the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) is a non-profit professional and educational organization with more than 2,000 members today. AAJA serves Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders by encouraging young people to consider journalism as a career, developing managers in the media industry, and promoting fair and accurate news coverage.

 

Association of American Publishers

AAP's mandate covers both the general and the specific — broad issues important to all publishers as well as issues of specific concern to particular segments of the industry. The Association's "core" programs deal with matters of general interest:intellectual property; new technology and digital issues of concern to publishers; Freedom to read, censorship and libel; international freedom to publish; funding for education and libraries; postal rates and regulations; tax and trade policy; international copyright enforcement. Directed by standing committees of the Association, these programs, along with a host of membership services including government affairs, a broad-based statistical program, public information and press relations, are the "core" activities of the Association.

 

Center for Investigative Reporting

The Center for Investigative Reporting is a nonprofit organization that reveals injustice and strengthens democracy through the tools of journalism. Investigative reporting -- requiring long lead times and significant investment of resources -- is in short supply. Under increasing pressure to deliver higher profits for publicly traded media companies, editors and producers cut back on time and people first. The predictable outcome: a shortage of original, in-depth and risk-taking reporting, and a citizenry deprived of the information required to maintain a vibrant democracy.

 

Columbia Journalism Review

Columbia Journalism Review’s mission is to encourage and stimulate excellence in journalism in the service of a free society. It is both a watchdog and a friend of the press in all its forms, from newspapers to magazines to radio, television, and the Web. Founded in 1961 under the auspices of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, CJR examines day-to-day press performance as well as the forces that affect that performance. The magazine is published six times a year, and offers a deliberative mix of reporting, analysis, criticism, and commentary. CJR.org, our Web site, delivers real-time criticism and reporting, giving CJR a vital presence in the ongoing conversation about the media. Both online and in print, Columbia Journalism Review is in conversation with a community of people who share a commitment to high journalistic standards in the U.S. and the world.

 

Council of Literary Magazines and Presses

The Council of Literary Magazines and Presses serves one of the most active segments of American arts and culture: the independent publishers of exceptional fiction, poetry and prose. Literary magazines and presses accomplish the backstage work of American literature: discovering new writers; supporting mid-career writers; publishing the creative voices of communities underrepresented in the mainstream commercial culture; and preserving literature for future readers by keeping books in print.

 

Ivestigative Reporters and Editors

Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc. is a grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of investigative reporting. IRE was formed in 1975 to create a forum in which journalists throughout the world could help each other by sharing story ideas, newsgathering techniques and news sources.

 

Magazine Publishers of America

Magazine Publishers of America (MPA) is the industry association for consumer magazines. Established in 1919, the MPA represents more than 240 domestic publishing companies with approximately 1,400 titles, more than 80 international companies and more than 100 associate members. Staffed by magazine industry specialists, the MPA is headquartered in New York City, with an office of government affairs in Washington, DC.

 

National Association of Black Journalists

The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is an organization of journalists, students and media-related professionals that provides quality programs and services to and advocates on behalf of black journalists worldwide.

 

National Association of Hispanic Journalists

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) is dedicated to the recognition and professional advancement of Hispanics in the news industry. Established in April 1984, NAHJ created a national voice and unified vision for all Hispanic journalists.

 

National Lesbian and Gay Journalist Association

The National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association New York (NLGJA-NY) is a local chapter of a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization of journalists, media professionals, educators and students who work within the news industry to foster fair and accurate coverage of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues. NLGJA-NY opposes all workplace bias and provides professional development to its members.

 

National Press Club

The Club shall provide people who gather and disseminate news a center for the advancement of their professional standards and skills, the promotion of free expression, mutual support and social fellowship.

 

National Press Photographers Associations

The National Press Photographers Association is dedicated to the advancement of photojournalism, its creation, editing and distribution, in all news media. NPPA encourages photojournalists to reflect high standards of quality in their professional performance and in their personal code of ethics. NPPA vigorously promotes freedom of the press in all its forms. To this end, NPPA provides continuing educational programs and fraternalism without bias, as we support and acknowledge the best the profession has to offer.

 

National Society of Newspaper Columnist

The society began in 1977, thanks to Larry Maddry of the (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot, who sent out letters to all kinds of columnists suggesting they get together and tell war stories, commiserate about editors and so forth.

 

Native American Journalists Association

The Native American Journalists Association serves and empowers Native journalists through programs and actions designed to enrich journalism and promote Native cultures.

 

Newspaper Association of America

NAA is a nonprofit organization representing the $55 billion newspaper industry. NAA members account for nearly 90 percent of the daily circulation in the United States and a wide range of nondaily U.S. newspapers. NAA also has many Canadian and International members. Educators, university newspapers, press associations and suppliers/vendors also are members. The Association focuses on six key strategic priorities that collectively affect the newspaper industry: marketing, public policy, diversity, industry development, newspaper operations and readership.

 

Newspaper Guild

Founded as a print journalists' union, the Guild today is primarily a media union whose members are diverse in their occupations, but who share the view that the best working conditions are achieved by people who have a say in their workplace.

 

Pew Research Center for the People & the Press

The Center is an independent opinion research group that studies attitudes toward the press, politics and public policy issues. We are best known for regular national surveys that measure public attentiveness to major news stories, and for our polling that charts trends in values and fundamental political and social attitudes.

 

Poynter

The Poynter Institute is a school for journalists, future journalists, and teachers of journalists. No matter what their job title may be, journalists come to Poynter in a search for excellence.

 

South Asian Journalists Association

The South Asian Journalists Association (SAJA) was formed in March 1994 with 18 members and was incorporated as a New York non-profit organization in 1996. SAJA serves as a networking and resource forum for journalists of South Asian origin and journalists interested in South Asia or the South Asian Diaspora.

 

Society of Environmental Journalist

The Society of Environmental Journalists is the only U.S.- based membership organization of working journalists dedicated to improvements in environmental reporting.<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

 

Society of News Design

The Society for News Design encourages high standards of journalism through design. An international forum and resource for all those interested in news design, SND works to recognize excellence and strengthen visual journalism as a profession.

 

American Society of News Editors

Academy of Television Arts

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is based in Los Angeles. It honors prime-time programming. It is comprised of 26 "peer groups" whose work is aired nationally and whose members are eligible to vote for the Emmy Awards. Peer groups are based on areas of expertise. They cover all fields of television work, from network executives to hair stylists; from performers to cinematographers. The Academy also encompasses a Los Angeles branch whose members work in Southern California. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is based in New York and administers daytime, news and sports Emmys. The National Academy has members nationwide and has affiliated chapters in major cities that award Emmys for local programming. The National Academy and Academy work closely together on the daytime Emmy honors. The National Academy website is located at www.emmyonline.org.

 

American Cable Association

The American Cable Association (ACA) represents independent operators that provide essential cable television, high-speed broadband, and phone services to Main Street America.

 

American Federation of Television and Radio Artists

The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) is a national labor union representing over 70,000 performers, journalists and other artists working in the entertainment and news media.

 

American Society of Media Photographers

ASMP promotes photographers' rights, educates photographers in better business practices, produces business publications for photographers and helps buyers find professional photographers. ASMP was founded in 1944 by a handful of the world's leading photojournalists and is recognized internationally for its leadership role. ASMP has over 5,000 members, including many of the world's greatest photographers, in 39 chapters nationwide.

 

American Women in Radio and Television

The mission of AWRT is to advance the impact of women in the electronic media and allied fields by educating, advocating and acting as a resource to our members and the industry.

 

Broadcast Education Association

The Broadcast Education Association (BEA) is the professional association for professors, industry professionals and graduate students who are interested in teaching and research related to electronic media and multimedia enterprises.

 

Association of Cable Communicators

The Association of Cable Communicators (ACC) is the only national, professional organization specifically addressing the issues, needs and interests of the cable industry's communications and public affairs professionals. Formally known as the Cable Television Public Affairs Association (CTPAA), its mission is to develop and promote cable communications excellence through professional development to help achieve industry and corporate goals. ACC works to enhance each member's status and influence through skill building and professional development.

 

Federal Communications Commission

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is an independent United States government agency. The FCC was established by the Communications Act of 1934 and is charged with regulating interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable. The FCC's jurisdiction covers the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. possessions.

 

Library of American Broadcasting

The Library of American Broadcasting holds a wide-ranging collection of audio and video recordings, books, pamphlets, periodicals, personal collections, oral histories, photographs, scripts and vertical files devoted exclusively to the history of broadcasting.

 

Minorities in Broadcasting

A non-profit organization formed to provide training opportunities to minority college graduates in radio/television news reporting and management.

 

National Association of Broadcasters

The National Association of Broadcasters is a trade association that advocates on behalf of more than 8,300 free, local radio and television stations and also broadcast networks before Congress, the Federal Communications Commission and the Courts.

 

National Association of Farm Broadcasters

NAFB is dedicated to serving the interest of the agricultural community and creating value for its Broadcast member stations and networks. NAFB is an established liaison between farm broadcast stations and networks and the Agri-Marketing community of companies and agencies.

 

National Association of Television Program Executives

NATPE is a global, non-profit organization dedicated to the creation, development and distribution of televised programming in all forms across all mature and emerging media platforms. NATPE develops and nurtures opportunities, both commercial and educational, for buying, selling and sharing of content and ideas.

 

Radio and Television News Directors Association

RTNDA is the world's largest professional organization exclusively serving the electronic news profession, consisting of more than 3,000 news directors, news associates, educators and students. Founded as a grassroots organization in 1946, the association is dedicated to setting standards for newsgathering and reporting. Although news techniques and technologies are constantly changing, RTNDA's commitment to encouraging excellence in the electronic journalism industry remains the same.

 

Society of Broadcast Engineers

The Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) is the only organization devoted to the advancement of all levels and types of broadcast engineering.

 

Women in Cable and Telecommunications

Developing women leaders is our mission. As the oldest and largest organization serving women professionals in cable and telecommunications, Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT) is at the forefront of an industry undergoing constant change. Accuracy In Media is a non-profit, grassroots citizens watchdog of the news media that critiques botched and bungled news stories and sets the record straight on important issues that have received slanted coverage.

 

Center for Media Literacy

A pioneer in its field, the Center for Media Literacy (CML) is an educational organization that provides leadership, public education, professional development and educational resources nationally. Dedicated to promoting and supporting media literacy education as a framework for accessing, analyzing, evaluating, creating and participating with media content, CML works to help citizens, especially the young, develop critical thinking and media production skills needed to live fully in the 21st century media culture. The ultimate goal is to make wise choices possible.

 

Media Research Center

The mission of the Media Research Center is to bring balance to the news media. Leaders of America's conservative movement have long believed that within the national news media a strident liberal bias existed that influenced the public's understanding of critical issues. On October 1, 1987, a group of young determined conservatives set out to not only prove — through sound scientific research — that liberal bias in the media does exist and undermines traditional American values, but also to neutralize its impact on the American political scene.
